Annual Report 2016

About us

Maria’s Children Art Center was founded in 1993 by a Moscow artist Maria Eliseeva when she began visiting children in one of the Moscow orphanages. Maria and her volunteer-friends visited kids, drew and painted with the children, invited them to their homes.

Nowadays Maria’s Children is the oldest Moscow’s non-profit organization, the art-studio hosting over 300 orphaned children and young people from 9 boarding schools of Moscow and Moscow region, including children with special needs. In the last year more programmes have appeared and more children started coming.

Our programmes in 2016

Daily art classes at the studio

Our studio is open for children and graduates. The kids attend painting, ceramics, tapestry, felting, handicrafts and music classes. In June we held art-workshops for children from the neighborhood.

Classes at Maria’s cottage workshop

Twice a week children from orphanages of Moscow and Moscow region learn to work at a potter’s wheel, master the art of mosaic, stained glass, ebru and many other kinds of applied arts.

Education and social assistance

At the request of the young people we attract volunteers - individual tutors who help them complete the secondary school curriculum. Our social teachers assist the high school students and graduates in setting up their homes and finding jobs, arrange visits to museums, theatres, sport activities.

Professional development and psychological support of the orphanage staff and teachers of the Beslan School №1

In March a group of teachers from Beslan and staff members of the PELICAN Foundation went on a study tour to Barcelona, where they visited a local school and the city’s museums.

Winter Camp

In February 2016, twenty children from orphanage Sputnik spent a week at our camp in Sorochany. They played sports, learned to cook, took part in performances, improved their drawing skills. The orphanage graduates helped as volunteers.

Maria’s Children - to the children of Beslan

In April a group of our staff members and volunteers from different countries paid its tenth visit to Beslan, where they held various master-classes for pupils of the School №1. Our visit to the “Hury Tyn” children’s home and an orphanage in Dur-Dur village was organized by former students of the Beslan School №1 who are currently our volunteers.

Hello, England!

In April-May 2016 a group of children and volunteers participated in the Shakespeare’s Drama Festival in Stratford-upon-Avon for the sixth time, the group gave its first performance at the Shakespeare’s school. In London they also had a busy cultural programme.

Annual festival “Ship of our Hopes”

In May our children, volunteers and staff sailed to the Bay of Joy where everyone could join an exciting quest, play outdoor games, enjoy a delicious picnic, paint en plain-air and feel the delight of spending a whole day on the lap of nature, among friends.

Italian Holidays

In June a group of children from the orphanage “Solnyshko” (Filimonki settlement, Moscow region) and three graduates of the Beslan school №1 travelled to Italy. On Sicily the young people learnt to surf, painted en plain-air, practiced acrobatics, staged performances. We also continued painting the walls of l’Aquila basketball club, restored after an earthquake, and visited Rome’s most famous historical sites.

Summer camp “Our Family”

In July 37 children from two orphanages, psychoneurological institution and Beslan’s school №1 spent two weeks at “Sorochany” resort in the Moscow region living in family groups, doing arts, learning to cook and playing developing games. Orphanage graduates and former students of the Beslan school helped us as volunteers.

Wall painting

In January we painted the walls in the children’s orthopedic department of the Russia’s Ministry of Labour Hospital, in April — in the gym of the Beslan School №1 and in September — in the Ostrov psychoneurological institution in the Moscow region.
